Read to Self
The best way for your child to become a better reader is to practice every day. During read to self your child will practice with good fit books and books of their choosing. They work hard on building stamina, which is doing something for a long period of time without giving up or stopping.
Work on Writing
The best way to become a better writer is to practice every day. During work on writing your child will be working on their writing stamina, which for some can be difficult and they may want to give up. This is why we practice every day.
Word Work
During word work your child will do all sorts of activities to help them better understand words. When they practice spelling and working with words they will become more fluent readers.
Read to Someone
First graders enjoy reading and like reading to a friend. Reading to someone helps with fluency and accuracy. The partner learns how to become a coach, and help the reader use strategies to figure out the correct word rather than just give them the answer
Listen to Reading
When we listen to reading we are tracking the words while we hear the story. We hear examples of what a good reader sounds like. We also learn new words, which helps expand our vocabulary.
