We are continuing to work hard in First Grade. These kiddos surprise me everyday with how much they know and remember!
Math In math we are working on different ways to solve adding and subtracting problems. We learned how to: count all, count on, draw proof drawings, write equations (both vertical and horizontal), decide which number is greater, and figure out if our question is an adding or subtracting question.
Science We finished our first science unit, solids and liquids. Students had fun investigating what makes a solid a solid, and a liquid a liquid. We have fun: playing with magnets, mixing liquids, having a drop race, observing liquids and solids, and watching to see if things sink or float. We finished the unit by making a class book about solids and liquids. And making butter (solid) from whipping cream (liquid).
Religion We have been discussing Jesus and his family. We talked about: where Jesus was born, where he grew up, the holy family, how to be a good family member, and how Jesus' life compares with our life.
Reading We are in full swing of daily 5 and reading. Our groups are rotating very smoothly. When students read with me they work very hard. We work on ways to figure out the word when we get stuck rather than looking for someone to give us the answer. We have been blending sounds to help us hear the beginning, middle, and end sounds of words. We have been learning about the short vowel sound of a. We learned about nouns. We discussed the main idea and details of stories that we read. We also learned how to make a text-to-self connection when reading books.
Writing In writing we finished our Small Moment Unit. We celebrated by reading our finished publications (which look BEAUTIFUL) and eating popcorn. We started our How To Unit. We made a HUGE list of things that we know how to do that we could teach our reader about, and we began a couple of how to stories.
