Math- We started and finished Unit 6-Comparing Data. We sorted, recorded, and compared data. At first we asked questions like: who has the most? who has the fewest?, but by the end we were asking more critical thinking questions like: how many more? how many fewer? At first this task seemed difficult to some students, but we quickly learned to look for those key words-more and fewer. We also realized the importance of breaking apart the story problem and writing down the information we know to help us answer the question.
Religion- We listened to the story of the risen Jesus visiting his followers. We learned about Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. We talked about how the Church began at Pentecost. We talked about how the church is all the people who believe in Jesus and follow his teachings. We discussed how the first church members were like a family.
Social Studies-We talked about voting, and symbols of the United States. We heard stories about good citizens in history. We read "My Favorite Book", shortly your child will be bringing this book home with them. It is a picture book donated to the first grade class, and focuses on how to do and be your best. We talked about how to say sorry. We also said that sorry doesn't always fix the problem, but it is a good start. We role played different problems and discussed how we could help fix the situation.
Science-We will begin out Einstein unit on weather next week.
Reading-We are working on vowel consonant e (vce) patterns that we see in words (mice, kite, cake, cute, etc) We know that when we see these patterns in words the vowel usually says its own name, or makes the long vowel sound. We learned how to use clues to help us figure out what happened in stories when the author doesn't actually come out and say it. We talked about past and present tense. We also learned about how to correctly use the words: is, are, was, were as verbs in a sentence.
Writing-We worked on poetry. We learned how to write an acrostic poem, color poem, shape poem, and two word poem. We learned that poems can rhyme, and can follow a pattern. Poems use words that help us make a good visual in our brain. Our final poem was called "I wish", you can see the final product below.
