I can't believe April is over, and we only have 1 full month of school left. We have been keeping very busy in First Grade.
Math-We are worked on 2-dimensional shapes and equal shares (fractions). We talked about sides, corners, square corners, and closed shapes. We learned that a square is a special rectangle. We noticed that we can put shapes together to create new shapes. We also worked on 3-dimensional shapes. Just like with 2-D shapes, we noticed that we can combine 3-D shapes together to make new ones. We learned that when we put the shapes together they can create a shape that already has a name, or a shape that doesn't have a name and we can name it ourselves. We called those shapes figures. The students used their imaginations to create their own figures and come up with names for them.
Science- We have been working on weather. We talked about using our senses to observe the weather. Each day we have a weather watcher. The weather watcher's job is to tell us: the wind speed, cloud cover, and precipitation. We made our own flags to practice observing wind speed. We also talked about temperature, and different types and uses of thermometers.
Religion-We continued to learn about the Church. We learned that the Holy Spirit helps the Church to grow. We learned about the Apostles, Bishops, and the Pope. We also learned what a parish is.

Reading-We are working on the difference between a question sentence and a statement sentence. We talked about why authors write nonfiction stories. We learned different patterns for the long o sound (o, o_e, oa), long u sound (u_e), long e sound (ee, ea, e), and long a sound (ai, ay). We worked on the -ng and -nk sound. We used a lot of Venn diagrams to compare and contrast. Students are now using Venn Diagrams all over the place. We are reviewing contractions and proper nouns. When we worked on proper nouns we focused on days, months, and holidays.
Writing-We finished up our opinion unit. We learned how to write reviews and recommendations. We watched Reading Rainbow to help see what book reviews look and sound like. We even created our own video about some of our favorite books. If you haven't checked it out you can look it up on the school's Facebook page. We also read the story "Hey Little Ant" which was about an ant bully. We used a letter format to help persuade the bully to not hurt the ant.
